slower ball, down the leg side ... and South Africa are reviewing! Was there a thin tickle? There was! And that is the end of that!
England vs South Africa, 2nd T20I at Cardiff, ENG v SA, Jul 28 2022 - Match Result
9.55pm That was another entertaining tussle. Thanks for joining us. From Miller and Ranjith, goodnight!
Time for the presentations
The Player of the Match is Rilee Rossouw "[My neck] is alright I guess. I'm a little dizzy. You have to try to be proactive, Jordan bowls world-class yorkers so sometimes you have to try something silly and hope it comes off. I am very proud to be selected again, and coming off the Somerset run I felt could. I tried my best for three figures but we got the W. I tucked in my shirt... maybe it will become a superstition!"
Jos Buttler "We did well at the end, we could have restricted them better in the middle. The wicket played well so though [207] was par. Rilee got in and it looked tough to stop him scoring, we had guys like myself who got starts but didn't make the matchwinning contribution. Consistency-wise what can we do better. The Ageas Bowl will be a great decider.
David Miller "We'll take a win, a great turn-around tonight, we took our catches and the batters were phenomenal. Great performance. We had a few meetings after sleeping on it last night. Chuffed with the bowlers, they made it easier for me by picking up wickets all the way through. I was juggling and if it had gone deep.... but the guys were superb. Our left-right combinations were very tactical... one-one, one to go."
9.42pm Well, that was the chase that never was. England lose by 58 runs, with 20 balls to spare... and you sense that with wickets in hand and a hint more impetus, that could have been a classic. But Tabraiz Shamsi's three-wicket spell was pivotal, while Andile Phehlukwayo held his nerve when the heat was on with three key wickets including two of the most dangerous, Buttler and Livingstone. Lungi Ngidi was brilliant too - seven wickets in 24 hours for him! And over-arching it all was a superb innings of 96 not out from Rilee Rossouw. He didn't field after taking a ball to the throat, but he has made his mark on his return to the colours
Uzair: "Coincidentally England got out on 149 by playing "HUNDRED" balls." Indeed... where do you think I got my maths from up top? 16.4 overs is an iconic figure now...
Dezz: "Surely Salt will take Roy's place at the top of the order for the decider...? When England were good at big chases, it was always the openers that set it up."
Mustafa Moudi : "Didnt get the logic behind having 2 T20Is at 2 different venues in 2 consecutive nights and then have a 2 days rest in between the 2nd and 3rd T20I. This match could have been played tomorrow to have a day's gap between all 3 games !!"
Tom: "Although I really like him, it's pretty clear it's Roy that has mainly caused this issue tonight, at his best her never use 20 balls at less than a run a ball, needs to get his form back or be swapped out now I reckon"
a big heave to leg, one bounce to deep midwicket
Simon Woodford: "At least Butler won the toss " Marginal gains...
pace on this time, a wild swipe, a thin snick! Well, we thought it was... Jordan has reviewed, but there seemed to be a noise. Yep, right on the toe of the blade as he wiped across the bouncer. Good change-up from Ngidi, and quite the comeback for South Africa
slower ball, outside off, skips under a swat
bowled round his legs! Full leg was up, as Rashid walked across his crease to pick off backward square, but loses his bails to the legcutter. This is almost done now
slapped hard off the back foot to cover
steps across the crease, tucks the fifth-stump line to the on-side
three in a row... it still doesn't yet add up to a boundary though...
more good judgement as Rashid lets Pheh target the tramlines
hitting the tramlines, but just the wrong side as Rashid lets it go
rocking back, using the pace, cut down to deep third
snicked and gone! Width again, Livingstone chases the full length, feathers it on the half-volley, and that's a huge breakthrough. That's also, surely, the game
pounded through the covers! Livingstone senses the wide line, strides into position and drills the drive!
on the back foot, Jordan stands tall and smokes the cut through backward point!
angled bat into the off side, just the single
full length, crushed through the covers! Livi's not done yet, misses the yorker, opens the face, picks off the boundary ... and an over-step! Or not...? Nothing much making sense right now. Might be a technical failing there
I said this over would be fun! Is it also curtains for England? Chris Jordan might need to hit a long ball tonight
slower ball bouncer, and Rababa has his man! A flapped uppercut from Welsh Fire's finest, and the Cardiff crowd is silenced as Ngidi at backward point runs back and clings on brilliantly over his shoulder!
full length, lambasted back through the line! Aiming for the yorker, misses by an inch, pays the price!
stunning! Bairstow unfurls the Natmeg! Inspired by Russo in the Euros maybe? The yorker, into the toes, Bairstow flatbats it through his legs!
swinging past the legs for starters
Rabada vs Bairstow. Oh joy. Popcorn at the ready!
