2015
The 152nd edition of the Almanack took aim at the ECB after a year in which "English cricket repeatedly lost touch", in the words of editor, Lawrence Booth. Moeen Ali, one of the Five Cricketers of the Year, featured on the front cover and was also the subject of a nuanced exploration of British Asian identity by Sarfraz Manzoor. Moeen was joined by Gary Ballance, Adam Lyth, Angelo Mathews and Jeetan Patel, while Kumar Sangakkara was named leading cricket in the world (for the second time) and Meg Lanning was the inaugural winner of the leading woman cricketer award. A new section devoted to women's cricket marked the growth of the game. Elsewhere, Ed Hawkins revealed the worrying truth about the fight against corruption and Muttiah Muralitharan explained why the ICC were right to clamp down on chuckers. Less than six months after the death of Phillip Hughes resonated beyond the world of cricket, Andrew Ramsey reflected on the moving response of a nation in shock. There were also pieces remembering WG Grace and Victor Trumper, a century after their deaths, and the usual unusual occurrences, from the first-class debutant given out for shouting to how a bee, a banana and a Babybel all affected matches in 2014.
