At St Vincent, May 15, 2004. West Indies won by one wicket. Toss: West Indies. One-day
international debut: T. L. Best.
West Indies' last pair clung on to avoid a humiliating defeat after carelessness and complacency
left them nine down, and still 12 runs short, in pursuit of a modest 145. Such a tense finale had
seemed unlikely when Bangladesh hobbled to 82 for eight in the 33rd over after Tino Best had
emulated Clive Lloyd (at The Oval in 1973) by taking two wickets in his first one-day international
over for West Indies. Only an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 62 brought Bangladesh some
respectability. While Powell was hitting a typically robust 52 in reply, it looked as if West Indies
would hardly miss Brian Lara, resting his injured finger as a precaution. But then the collapse
began: five wickets for 14, two to panicky run-outs. With the tension mounting and the Bangladeshis
hardly believing they were so close to such a triumph, Bradshaw and Edwards crawled to victory.
Bradshaw's cool head - and his exemplary two for 11 from ten overs - won him the match award.
Man of the Match: I. D. R. Bradshaw.
