Gillespie suffered the injury on the fourth day of the Fifth Orange Test match in Sydney, which England won by 225 runs.
The assessment revealed capsule damage to the elbow joint and the fast-bowler has been instructed to rest for 2-3 weeks.
Gillespie will be reassessed by Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott when the senior side assembles in Adelaide ahead of its VB Series match against England, scheduled to begin on 19 January.
