Former Australian Test captain Ian Chappell is expected to deliver the main eulogy at David Hookes's funeral at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday (January 27). Hookes scored 20 of his 29 first-class centuries on the ground. A memorial service will be held at the MCG on February 5.
"The family invites all of David's friends, business and sporting associates, as well as members of the public, to join them in these celebrations of his life," Chappell, Hookes's first captain at South Australia, told reporters. "The Hookes family are greatly appreciative of the overwhelming support and sympathy offered to them following the recent death of David."
The South Australia side returned to Adelaide yesterday, remaining tight-lipped and declining to speak to the press. Darren Lehmann, who was with Hookes at the time of the assault, was visibly upset when reunited with his wife and children at the airport.
