Opening bowler Martin Suji formed part of Kenya's backbone for more than a decade. An excellent fielder, he made his debut for Kenya in 1990, and played in the 1996, 1999 and 2003 World Cups as well as the 1990, 1994 and 1997 ICC Trophy competitions. Suji picked up a handful of wickets in tidy spells in the opening stages of the 2003 World Cup. He then turned in a sparkling Man-of-the-Match performance in Kenya's Super Six seven-wicket win against Zimbabwe, as he returned figures of 3 for 19, to catapult his side into the semi-final. But he was forced to sit on the sidelines as Kenya's infighting led to them being isolated from international cricket, and when they did eventually return in 2006 he suffered a serious knee injury, limiting him to three unimpressive matches in Bangladesh. His hopes of making a fourth World Cup were dashed when he broke down in an A-team game on the eve of selection.
