The Electronic Telegraph Warm-up match: Lancashire v Scotland
Keith Graham at Old Trafford - 10 May 1999

Scots fired by Philip's fine innings

Scotland (161-3) v Lancashire. Match abandoned

Altough rain eventually put paid to Scotland's second World Cup warm-up game at Old Trafford yesterday, they were at least able to put a few more pieces of their jigsaw together.

The 40-year-old opening batsman Iain Philip, in reaching an admirable 55, showed he still has plenty to offer. Lancashire seamers Mike Smethurst and Richard Green made the ball move about on a rain-affected wicket. Bruce Patterson gloved a lifting ball from Green to wicketkeeper Jamie Haynes with only 11 on the board.

But Philip played with real assurance. He had gone to a splendid half century in 75 balls when Gary Keedy got through his defence with a quicker ball.

The other bonuses for the Scots were the form of Mike de Allingham and their captain George Salmond, who also found form with the bat after his failure at Riverside on Saturday.

But having reached 161 for three in 38 overs, heavy rain ended the proceedings.
