The formidable Indian duo Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid hit the depleted Sri Lankan attack to all corners of the small ground at Taunton as India scored 373 for six in the World Cup group match. Ganguly is fourth in the all-time-one-day list,] behind Pakistan's Saeed Anwar (194), West Indies' Viv Richards (189*) and Kirsten (188*). Ganguly's 183 surpassed Kapil Dev's 175 against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup as the highest individual One-day innings by an Indian. It was the second highest total in One-day Internationals after Sri Lanka's 398 for five against Kenya at Kandy in the 1996 World Cup.

England, Sri Lanka and India are the only countries to have the honour of achieving the unique record of 300-plus in consecutive matches. But England is the only country to have the honour of achieving the unique record of scoring 300-plus runs in two consecutive matches on two occasions. In the second Texaco Trophy One-day played at The Oval, they scored 302-5 in 55 overs. In the next match played at Nottingham they scored 363-7 in 55 overs. England had already achieved this feat in 1983 World Cup, by scoring 322-6 in 60 overs against New Zealand at The Oval and making 333-9 in 60 overs against Sri Lanka in Taunton in two successive matches.
