About reported betting linked to the Wills International Cup,
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Saber Hossain Chowdhury has said
there have been such rumours during other events and the ICC is aware
about that.
"But the whole issue is debatable," he told CricInfo365 and ruled out
the possibility of betting over the Wills International Cup in Dhaka
while the second quarter final between world champions Sri Lanka and
New Zealand was going on at Bangabandhu National Stadium.
The sensational beting issue was highlighted in local press Monday,
specially in tabloid Bangla daily Manab Zamin.
About successful first three-day of the biggest sport carnival in the
country, the BCB President said it was a matter of pride for
Bangladesh to have been able to host Wills International Cup after the
devastating flood.
"The tournament has been able to project Bangladesh's positive image
outside and that we're capable of hosting such a big event," he said.
Asked about the huge expenditure of 3.3 million US dollar for the
one-off tournament at a time when the government has appealed for
international flood aid, he said it was not that huge. "But we've got
more in return."
Saber Chowdhury, who is also the Deputy Minister for Shipping, said:
"Benefits are not confined to this tournament alone but well beyond...
there has been infrastructural development and a boost to the game
itself in the cricket-mad country."
He added: "We also needed the tournament for a face-lift to the
profile of the country."
